Has there ever been a time in your life where you are searching for answers as to why you are not advancing in your career, your relationships, your life? You feel stuck, you put in the hours every day, you have wins and feel amazing only to be followed by a quick swift kick in the gut and everything comes back to “normal”? You are not getting to where you want to go. You might be growing and scaling but not at the pace you want. If you are like me, you want it NOW and when it’s not happening NOW or at the pace you want, you feel sad, scared, down on yourself wondering if you are ever going to “MAKE IT”. You might make Amazing Strides, only to be followed by failures and losses that bring you right back down to your “normal” being. If this is you or has ever been you, I have finally found the answers! After spending the past few years feeling “stuck” in the same production- only growing at a 6% - 7% pace per year, and desperately want to take Major Leaps (which happened) only to be followed by Setbacks to keep me at “MY Pace” I have been searching for answers and here is what I found.

Ed Mylett talks about the Thermostat of Your Life, Gay Hendricks in the book The Big Leap talks about the Upper Limit Problem, Ryan Stewman, founder of Apex and other mastermind groups talks about the Force of Average. In my opinion, they all mean the same thing. The Moment you start to make big strides in your life and in business, the Thermostat or the Upper Limit Problem or the Force of Average takes you right back down to your “normal”. Let me explain. I am going to refer to this, as Ed Mylett does, as the Thermostat of your Life because for me I can actually visualize this. Think about your home or your car. You have a Thermostat in your home or car and have it set at a certain temperature. The moment the temperature gets to hot or too cold, the Thermostat kicks in and brings the temperature right back down to where you have it set. The same goes for your life. You have your life set at a certain temperature. If you are reading this article and agreeing with me, than I am going to assume that the temperature is NOT set at the temperature you want it to be at. So when you make great strids in your business or in your life, you start to feel happy, excited, On Top of the World and then all of a sudden something happens to bring you right back down to the temperature your life is set at. I see it so much in my life and in the life of others. So the question is, how do we raise or temperature? How do we raise the temperature in our life so that when we do have setbacks we are now having setbacks at our “New Temperature” or our “New Normal?” To be honest, this is something I am still trying to figure out. Unfortunately I see this is a Journey to our destination and not a sprint to a finishline, however, there are ways we can make this journey more enjoyable and speed it up a little at the same time and here is how:

  1. Understand and Recognize this is happening. Everyone has ways that they limit themselves and bring themselves back down to their normal temperature. When setbacks happen, and they will, try to figure out what caused it. I’m not talking about the actual or physical thing that took place, but what happened Internally within you that caused that thermostat to fall. Recognize that the Thermostat starts with YOU and not some External thing. I can tell you that for me it is mindset. The moment great things are happening and I am growing and everything is going great, I start to wonder when it is going to end. I start to worry and get in my own head. This is my “Upper Limit Problem” that I have now recognized. So the next time that happens, I must realize what I am doing and push those thoughts out of my mind. Stay Positive. Keep Moving Forward. For others, it might be fear of outshining others, self-limiting beliefs that they are not worthy of more, Religious Beliefs keeping them from succeeding or negative family and people around them that tell them they can’t do it. Whatever it is for you, figure out it out and CHANGE IT. Recognize it is happening and Change it Immediately.

  1. People- There is an old saying that you are the average of the 5 people you hang around with. I believe this to be true! Unfortunately, we probably love the people we hang around with and that is why we hang around with them, however, they may be the people holding you back for your Greatness. If you want more, find people doing more than you. Find people doing what you want to do and watch them, hang around them, join groups or masterminds with likeminded people. If you want more money, find people earning more than you and hang around them. You don’t want to be the Taj Mahal of the neighborhood- if you know what I mean. Eliminate the negative people from your life. Sometimes the negative people in our life are close family and friends. You don’t have to eliminate them but limit the time spent with them. Surround yourself with Positive People that Inspire you. Sometimes this can be hard to find those people. For me, I have found and joined Facebook Groups and a Mastermind and met a family of people from across the United States that I surround myself with. These people don’t have to be in your immediate area. Figure out what you want and find out where those people hang out whether it is in your area or online and surround yourself with them.

  1. Mindset- For Me, My Mindset is the number one culprit of the Thermostat of my life. For some reason I self-sabotage with worry when things start to go great. The great news is that I finally recognize that. I’m sure I need to get to the root of that problem but for now I am just going to work on my mindset. Things that help me with keeping positive is recognizing the negative thoughts and pushing them out, practicing my miracle morning that includes journaling, mediation, exercise and reading. Other things such as daily gratitude, listening to music, reading and watching successful people on Youtube, Eliminating the News and Negative Media and even Social Media if necessary also helps. I encourage you to figure out what helps you get you out of your “funk” and make that change Immediately! Don’t let days or weeks go by. The most successful people know how to control their mind. Change your thoughts and you will change your life.

  1. Keep Moving Forward- A lot of times when things are great and we are heading in the direction of our dreams and then we get knocked down- we stay down. We feel stuck. We wonder what Is going on, why is this happening and Analysis Paralysis kicks in. Get up and move forward. Don’t stay down. Don’t let days or weeks go by and in some cases months. Be reminded that this is only Life trying to bring you back down to your “Normal Thermostat” or this is your Upper Limit Problem or the Force of Average working. Don’t let it do what it is trying to do. You Got This! Get Up and Get Moving. There is a Chinese Proverb that says “ To get through the hardest journey and continue living, we need to take only one step at a time but we must keep stepping”

So I Encourage you to look at your life and your Thermostat. Is it where you want it to be? If not, change it! Search for Answers. Read books like “The Big Leap” or Ed Mylett’s book “Max Out” watch Youtube Videos, Join Masterminds, Find Clubs in your local area. Get out that and Be the Person you are destined to be. You got this!
